British Science Week

Dr Claire Price, of the Centre for Cytochrome P450 Biodiversity, was awarded an Outreach Grant from the Biochemical Society to deliver an event during British Science Week. Claire's event took place on Thursday 19th March 2015 and formed part of the Science Week activities at Abercanaid Community School, Merthyr Tydfil. The event focused on promoting scientific investigation, scientific thinking and enhancing English language skills. This was achieved by giving the children three known samples: sugar, bicarbonate of soda and cornflour. They were given a scenario that if they were crime scene investigators and they had found these powders at a crime scene, then they would need to find a way to differentiate between the 3 because they all look like a white powder on the surface. After learning about the properities of each of the powders, the children were then asked to identify an unknown sample given their new found expertise.

More information on the event can be found here. The event was also reported on Biochemist e-volution, the e-magazine of the Biochemical Society.
