2019

At the recent STEM Ambassadors South East Wales Celebration held on the 2nd December, our very own Dr Claire Price was presented with a "Making an outstanding contribution to the STEM Ambassador program in Wales" award.

On the 10th October 2019, Swansea University Medical School was awarded an Enhanced Silver Athena Swan Award. The Athena Swan Charter recognises work undertaken to address gender equality. This achievement has greater significance for the Centre for Cytochrome P450 Biodiversity as our very own Prof Diane Kelly and Dr Anna Seager played important roles in securing the award.

The Centre for Cytochrome P450 Biodiversity was instrumental in the discovery of BASF's new blockbuster fungicide, Revysol. This YouTube clip from BASF shows more of the experimental screening processes they used.

Congratulations to our very own Dr Anna Seager who is co-winner of the Mary Williams award for her contributions to the Athena SWAN charter within Swansea University Medical School and the University as a whole.

The Centre for Cytochrome P450 Biodiversity has played a key role in the understanding of megaviruses and their potential to cause life-threatening illnesses. This work was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) and is a collaboration between the Centre for Cytochrome P450 Biodiversity, based at Swansea University Medical School, and institutions from the USA, including the world-renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, the University of California Irvine, and the University of Tennessee. VT-1161 and VT-1598 are promising new azole antifungal drugs. In experiments with fluconazole-resistant isolates of Candida albicans these drugs showed potent activity. The Centre for Cytochrome P450 Biodiversity have played an integral part in the characterisation of these drugs. The study can be found here.
